Job 23 · Grade 4

He Knows the Way I Take

Name Date

Read and Think

Job said his complaint was still bitter, and God's hand was heavy on him. He wished he knew where to find God so he could set his cause in order and fill his mouth with arguments. He believed God would not crush him with power but would listen to him.

Job said, If I go east, he is not there. If I go west, I can't find him. He looked north and south too. God seemed hidden. Yet Job still trusted: But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I will come out like gold.

Gold is tested in fire to remove what is impure. Job said his foot had held fast to God's steps, and he had treasured God's words more than his necessary food. Still, he admitted he was afraid in God's presence. Job's faith was honest, mixing trust and fear.

  2. What did Job say when God seemed hidden?

  3. Why is gold tested in fire?

Job 23 · Grade 5

Tested and Refined

Name Date

Read and Think

Job says, Even today my complaint is rebellious. His hand is heavy in spite of my groaning. Oh that I knew where I might find him! He would set his cause in order and fill his mouth with arguments. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would listen to me. Job is confident that a fair hearing before God would clear him.

Yet God seems hidden: If I go east, he is not there. If I go west, I can't find him. He works to the north, but I can't see him. Then Job turns from what he cannot see to what God sees: But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I will come out like gold. Job believes his trial is a refining, not a punishment, which is closer to the truth than anything the friends have said.

Job declares, My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned away. I haven't gone back from the commandment of his lips. I have treasured up the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. Yet he says God stands alone and does what He desires, and he admits, Therefore I am terrified at his presence. Job's faith is real but not yet at rest. That rest comes when God speaks in chapters 38 to 42.

Show What You Know

  1. What is Job confident a fair hearing would do?

  2. What does Job turn to when God seems hidden?

  3. How does Job understand his trial?

  4. What has Job treasured more than his necessary food?

  5. When does Job's faith come to rest?
