Eliphaz said Job did not give water or bread to people in need. But this was not true. Job was a kind man who helped the poor.

Eliphaz also said to know God and be at peace. He said to keep God's words in your heart. That is good. But Eliphaz was wrong about Job.

Job 22 · Grade 3

False Charges

Name Date

Read the Story

Eliphaz spoke a third time. He asked, Isn't your wickedness great? He said there was no end to Job's iniquities.

Eliphaz said Job had not given water to the weary or bread to the hungry. He said Job had sent widows away empty. But none of this was true. God called Job blameless and upright.

Then Eliphaz said, Acquaint yourself with him now, and be at peace. Lay up his words in your heart. He said the Almighty will be your treasure. This advice is good, but Eliphaz used it to accuse Job falsely.

A List of Untrue Sins

Name Date

Read and Think

In his third speech, Eliphaz went further than before. He asked, Isn't your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities. He now named specific sins.

Eliphaz said Job had taken pledges from his brother for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing. He said Job withheld water from the weary and bread from the hungry, and sent widows away empty. Not one of these charges was true. In chapter 29, Job describes how he clothed himself with righteousness and helped the fatherless.

Eliphaz then urged Job to return to God: Acquaint yourself with him now, and be at peace. Lay up his words in your heart. The Almighty will be your treasure. These words are true about God, but Eliphaz aimed them at Job as if Job had turned away from God.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Eliphaz do in his third speech that he had not done before?

  2. What sins did Eliphaz name?

  3. Were these charges true?

  4. What true words did Eliphaz say about God?

Think About It

  1. Eliphaz made up sins to fit his idea about Job. How can we guard against believing something just because it fits our ideas?

  2. Eliphaz said the Almighty will be your treasure. How can God be your treasure?

Job 22 · Grade 5

The Almighty Will Be Your Treasure

Name Date

Read and Think

Eliphaz's third speech is his harshest. Can a man be profitable to God? Is it for your piety that he reproves you? Isn't your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities. Eliphaz has moved from gentle hints to direct accusation, because his theory requires that Job's great suffering match great sin.

He invents a list of crimes: For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. You haven't given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. You have sent widows away empty. Not one charge is supported. God Himself called Job blameless and upright (1:1, 1:8), and in chapter 29 Job recalls being eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. Eliphaz even claims Job says, What does God know?

Eliphaz closes with an appeal that sounds beautiful: Acquaint yourself with him now, and be at peace. Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. The Almighty will be your treasure, and precious silver to you. You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. The words are true about God, but they are wrongly aimed. In 42:7 God says the friends did not speak of Him what is right, and in 42:8 Job prays for them.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Eliphaz move to direct accusation?

  2. What crimes does Eliphaz invent?

  3. How do 1:1, 1:8, and chapter 29 answer Eliphaz?

  4. What beautiful appeal does Eliphaz make?

  5. What happens in 42:8?

Think About It

  1. Eliphaz bent the facts to fit his theory. When have you seen someone hold on to an idea even when the facts did not fit?

  2. Eliphaz's beautiful words were true about God but wrong about Job. How can you be careful to speak truth in a way that is also fair?
