Job 20 · Grade 5
The Heritage Appointed by God
Read and Think
Zophar answers with feeling: Therefore my thoughts answer me, even by reason of my haste that is in me. I have heard the reproof which puts me to shame. He appeals to ancient wisdom: since man was placed on earth, the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment. Even if his height reaches the heavens, he will perish.
Zophar describes the wicked man's end. He will fly away as a dream. The eye which saw him will see him no more. He has swallowed down riches, and he will vomit them up again. For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor. He has violently taken away a house. Because he knew no quietness within him, his prosperity will not endure. The heavens will reveal his iniquity. The earth will rise up against him.
Zophar concludes, This is the portion of a wicked man from God, the heritage appointed to him by God. His speech is a thinly veiled charge that Job became rich by oppressing the poor. Yet Job 1:1 calls Job blameless and upright, and in chapter 29 Job recalls delivering the poor who cried. Zophar's general truth about judgment is twisted into a false accusation, and God says in 42:7 that the friends have not spoken of Him what is right.
