Job 20 · Grade 4
The Portion of a Wicked Man
Read and Think
Zophar felt shamed by Job's words and answered in haste. He asked whether Job knew from old time, since man was placed on earth, that the triumphing of the wicked is short and the joy of the godless but for a moment.
Zophar said the wicked man would fly away as a dream. His children would seek the favor of the poor, and his hands would give back his wealth. He had oppressed and forsaken the poor, so his prosperity would not endure. The heavens would reveal his iniquity.
Zophar ended, This is the portion of a wicked man from God. He was hinting that Job had gained his wealth by oppressing the poor. But in chapter 29, Job describes how he rescued the poor and the fatherless. Zophar was wrong, and God later said the friends had not spoken what is right.
