Satan came before the Lord again. God said Job still held on to what was right. God let Satan make Job sick, but Satan could not take his life.

Job got painful sores from his feet to his head. He sat among the ashes. His wife told him to turn away from God. Job said we get good things from God, and we can also take hard things. Job did not sin with his lips.

Job had three friends. Their names were Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They came to comfort Job. They cried when they saw him. They sat on the ground with him seven days and seven nights. No one said a word, for his grief was very great.

Job 2 · Grade 3

Seven Days of Silence

Name Date

Read the Story

Once again Satan came before the Lord. The Lord said Job still held fast his integrity. Satan said that if Job's own body were hurt, Job would renounce God. The Lord said Job was in Satan's hand, but Satan must spare his life.

Satan struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head. Job took a broken piece of pottery to scrape himself and sat among the ashes. His wife asked if he still held to his integrity and told him to renounce God. Job answered, Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job didn't sin with his lips.

Job's three friends heard about his trouble. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar met together to comfort him. When they saw him from far away, they did not know him. They wept, tore their robes, and threw dust on their heads. Then they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

Memory Verse

“So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.”

Job 2 · Grade 4

Holding Fast in Pain

Name Date

Read and Think

Satan came before Yahweh a second time. Yahweh said that Job still maintained his integrity, even after losing so much. Satan claimed that a man will give all he has for his life, and that if Job's own bone and flesh were touched, Job would renounce God. Yahweh allowed it, but commanded Satan to spare Job's life. Once again God set the limit.

Job was struck with painful sores from head to foot. He sat among the ashes, scraping himself with a potsherd. His wife urged him to renounce God and die. Job told her she spoke like one of the foolish women and asked whether we should receive good from God and not also receive trouble. In all this Job didn't sin with his lips.

Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite came to sympathize with Job and comfort him. They hardly recognized him. They wept aloud, tore their robes, and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word, for they saw that his grief was very great. Their quiet presence was a kind beginning.

Job 2 · Grade 5

Shall We Not Receive Evil?

Name Date

Read and Think

The second test begins like the first. Yahweh again asks Satan whether he has considered His servant Job, and adds that Job still maintains his integrity, although Satan incited Him against Job to ruin him without cause. Satan answers, Skin for skin. He says that if God touches Job's bone and flesh, Job will renounce Him to His face. Yahweh says, Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life.

Satan strikes Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head. Job sits among the ashes, scraping himself with a potsherd. His wife asks whether he still holds to his integrity and tells him to renounce God and die. Job answers that she speaks as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job didn't sin with his lips. Satan's claim about Job has failed a second time.

Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite hear of Job's trouble and make an appointment together to sympathize with him and comfort him. They do not recognize him from a distance. They raise their voices and weep, tear their robes, and sprinkle dust on their heads toward the sky. Then they sit with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one speaks a word, for they see that his grief is very great. Later their many words will go wrong, but their first silence shows real sympathy.
