Job 17 · Grade 5
The Righteous Will Hold to His Way
Read and Think
Job's spirit is consumed, his days are extinct, and the grave seems ready for him. Surely there are mockers with me. He turns to God with a striking request: Now give a pledge. Be collateral for me with yourself. Who is there who will strike hands with me? Job asks God Himself to guarantee his case, because no one else will. This continues his hope for a heavenly witness from chapter 16.
Job says God has made him a byword of the people, and his eye is dim by reason of sorrow. Upright men will be astonished at this. Then he speaks a confident truth: Yet the righteous will hold to his way. He who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger. Even while suffering, Job believes that perseverance in righteousness leads to strength.
Job tells his friends to come back, for he will not find a wise man among them. They change the night into day, saying the light is near in the presence of darkness. Job feels his plans are broken off and asks, where then is my hope? As for my hope, who will see it? The question hangs in the air, but the book will answer it when God speaks and restores Job.
