Job 17 · Grade 4
Where Then Is My Hope?
Read and Think
Job felt his days were nearly over. His spirit was consumed, and mockers surrounded him. He asked God to give a pledge and stand as collateral for him, since no one else would strike hands with him. Only God could guarantee his case.
Job said he had become a byword, and his eye was dim with sorrow. Upright people would be astonished at what had happened to him. Yet he stated a firm truth: the righteous will hold to his way, and he who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger.
Job told his friends that he could not find a wise man among them. His plans were broken off. He felt near the grave, and he asked, Where then is my hope? Job's question is honest, but even here he has turned to God as the only one who could stand for him.
