Job 16 · Grade 5
He Who Vouches for Me
Read and Think
Job answers Eliphaz: I have heard many such things. You are all miserable comforters! Shall vain words have an end? He admits he could speak as they do, joining words together and shaking his head at them. But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The solace of my lips would relieve you. Job shows what true comfort would look like.
Job describes his suffering in strong images. Though I speak, my grief is not subsided. God has surely worn him out and made all his company desolate. He feels as though God has torn him in wrath and given him over to the ungodly, though there is no violence in his hands and his prayer is pure. He has sewed sackcloth on his skin, and his eyelids carry the shadow of death.
Then comes one of the great leaps of faith in the book: Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven. He who vouches for me is on high. My friends scoff at me. My eyes pour out tears to God, that he would maintain the right of a man with God. Job senses that only someone in heaven can plead his case. In the New Testament, Hebrews 7:25 says Jesus lives forever to make intercession for those who draw near to God through Him.
