Job 15 · Grade 4

Harder Words

Name Date

Read and Think

In his second speech, Eliphaz was sharper. He said Job's words were like the east wind. Your own mouth condemns you, and not I, he said. He claimed Job was hindering devotion before God.

Eliphaz asked whether Job was the first man born or had heard the secret counsel of God. He said the gray-headed and aged were on the friends' side. He asked whether the consolations of God were too small for Job. Yet Eliphaz's own words had not been gentle.

Eliphaz described the wicked man, who lives in distress and anguish and whose riches do not last. He will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and cast off his flower as the olive tree. Eliphaz meant this as a warning to Job, but he was wrong about Job. God later said the friends had not spoken what is right.

  2. What did Eliphaz ask about God's consolations?

  3. What is ironic about Eliphaz's talk of gentle words?

  4. What did Eliphaz say the wicked man is like?

Think About It

  1. Eliphaz spoke of God's gentle word but was not gentle himself. How can you make your words gentle?

  2. Eliphaz relied on the aged to prove his point. How can you test whether an idea is really true?

Job 15 · Grade 5

The Consolations of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Eliphaz's second speech is sharper than his first. Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind? He accuses Job of hindering devotion before God and says, Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you. Eliphaz now treats Job's honest lament as proof of guilt.

Eliphaz challenges Job's wisdom with sarcasm. Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills? Have you heard the secret counsel of God? He points to the gray-headed and very aged men on his side. Then he asks, Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you? The irony is that Eliphaz's own words have not been gentle.

Eliphaz repeats that man is unclean and describes at length the torment of the wicked: a sound of terrors is in his ears, his riches will not continue, and he will shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and will cast off his flower as the olive tree. His portrait of the wicked is meant as a mirror for Job. But the mirror is false. In Job 42:7 God says the friends have not spoken of Him the thing that is right.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Eliphaz now treat Job's lament?

  2. What sarcastic questions does Eliphaz ask about Job's wisdom?

  3. What is ironic about Eliphaz's question about God's gentle word?

  4. How does Eliphaz describe the wicked?

  5. Why is Eliphaz's mirror for Job false?
