Job 13 · Grade 4

Physicians of No Value

Name Date

Read and Think

Job told his friends that he knew as much as they did. He wanted to speak to the Almighty and reason with God. He called them forgers of lies and physicians of no value, and said that if they would be completely silent, they would be wise.

Job asked whether they would speak unrighteously for God and talk deceitfully for Him. He warned that God would reprove them if they showed partiality. This warning came true in chapter 42, when God was angry with the friends.

Job said, Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him. He set his cause in order and asked God to call him and let him answer. He asked how many his sins were, and why God hid His face and treated him as an enemy.

  1. What did Job call his friends?

  2. What did Job ask about the way his friends spoke for God?

  3. When did Job's warning come true?

Job 13 · Grade 5

Nevertheless I Will Maintain My Ways

Name Date

Read and Think

Job answers the friends' claims to wisdom. Behold, my eye has seen all this. What you know, I know also. He does not want to argue with them; he wants to speak to God: Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God. He calls them forgers of lies and physicians of no value, and says, Oh that you would be completely silent! Then you would be wise.

Job then asks a searching question: Will you speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him? He warns that God will surely reprove them if they show partiality. Their memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes. This warning anticipates Job 42:7, where God tells Eliphaz that the friends have not spoken of Him the thing that is right.

In the WEB, Job's famous line reads: Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him. Even facing death, Job will not stop coming before God. He sets his cause in order and pleads, Then call, and I will answer, or let me speak, and you answer me. How many are my iniquities and sins? Why do you hide your face, and consider me your enemy? Will you harass a driven leaf?

Show What You Know

  1. What does Job want instead of arguing with his friends?

  2. What question does Job ask about the friends' speech?

  3. How does Job 42:7 fulfill Job's warning?

  4. How does Job 13:15 read in the WEB?

  5. What image does Job use for himself?
