Job 13 · Grade 5
Nevertheless I Will Maintain My Ways
Read and Think
Job answers the friends' claims to wisdom. Behold, my eye has seen all this. What you know, I know also. He does not want to argue with them; he wants to speak to God: Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God. He calls them forgers of lies and physicians of no value, and says, Oh that you would be completely silent! Then you would be wise.
Job then asks a searching question: Will you speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him? He warns that God will surely reprove them if they show partiality. Their memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes. This warning anticipates Job 42:7, where God tells Eliphaz that the friends have not spoken of Him the thing that is right.
In the WEB, Job's famous line reads: Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him. Even facing death, Job will not stop coming before God. He sets his cause in order and pleads, Then call, and I will answer, or let me speak, and you answer me. How many are my iniquities and sins? Why do you hide your face, and consider me your enemy? Will you harass a driven leaf?
