Blessed Be the Lord's Name

Read the Story

Job lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless and upright. He feared God and turned away from evil. He had seven sons, three daughters, seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels. After his children feasted, Job rose early and offered burnt offerings for each of them, in case they had sinned.

One day the Lord said to Satan that there was no one like Job on the earth. Satan answered, Does Job fear God for nothing? He said that if God took away all Job had, Job would turn against Him. The Lord let Satan touch all Job had, but not Job himself.

Then messengers came one after another. Enemies took the oxen, donkeys, and camels. Fire fell and burned up the sheep. A great wind struck the house where Job's children were, and they died. Job tore his robe, fell on the ground, and worshiped. He said, Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh's name. In all this, Job didn't sin.

Worship in the Worst Day

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Job opens with a man in the land of Uz who was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. God had blessed him with seven sons, three daughters, and great flocks and herds, so that he was the greatest of all the children of the east. Job cared about his children's hearts and offered burnt offerings for them continually.

In heaven, the Lord pointed to Job as His servant. Satan claimed Job feared God only because God had put a hedge around him and blessed him. God allowed Satan to touch all that Job had, but not to put forth his hand on Job himself. God remained in control and set the limit.

In one day, Job lost his oxen, donkeys, sheep, camels, servants, and then his sons and daughters when a great wind struck the house. Job grieved deeply. He tore his robe, shaved his head, and fell to the ground. Yet he worshiped. He said that he came into the world with nothing and would leave with nothing. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh's name. In all this, Job didn't sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.

Job 1 · Grade 5

The Lord Gave and the Lord Has Taken Away

Name Date

Read and Think

Job opens with a portrait of a man in the land of Uz who was blameless and upright, who feared God and turned away from evil. His possessions were vast: seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household. He was a faithful father who rose early to offer burnt offerings for his children, in case they had sinned and renounced God in their hearts.

The scene moves to heaven, where God's sons present themselves before Yahweh, and Satan comes among them. Yahweh asks whether Satan has considered His servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth. Satan answers, Does Job fear God for nothing? He accuses Job of serving God only for the hedge of blessing around him. Yahweh permits Satan to touch all that Job has but not Job himself. The reader learns what Job never learns: God set the limits of the trial.

Then four messengers arrive, each beginning before the last has finished. The Sabeans take the oxen and donkeys, fire falls on the sheep, the Chaldeans take the camels, and a great wind strikes the house where Job's children are, and they die. Job tears his robe, shaves his head, falls on the ground, and worships. Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh's name. In all this, Job didn't sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing. In the New Testament, James 5:11 points to the perseverance of Job and to the Lord's compassion and mercy.
