Jeremiah 9 · Grade 5

Understanding and Knowing God

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 9 opens with the prophet's tears. Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a spring of tears. Jeremiah was so troubled by the faithlessness around him that he longed to escape to a lodging place in the wilderness. The chapter also calls for mourning women to lament, because disaster and death were coming to Jerusalem and Judah.

The heart of the problem was deceit. They bend their tongue, as their bow, for falsehood. Friends deceive each other, and will not speak the truth. Every brother would supplant and every neighbor would slander. God summed it up, saying that through deceit they refuse to know him. Lying to others and refusing God went together.

Against this, God set out what is worth boasting in. Not wisdom, might, or riches. But let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me. God described himself as Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness on the earth. Knowing God means sharing in what he delights in. In the New Testament, Paul quotes this idea, telling believers to boast in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:31).
