Watchmen and a Trumpet

Name Date

Read the Story

God warned Jerusalem that trouble was coming from the north. He told his people to stand in the ways and look. They should ask for the old paths, where the good way is. If they walked in it, they would find rest for their souls.

But the people said they would not walk in it. God set watchmen over them to blow the trumpet as a warning. The people said they would not listen.

Some leaders told the people everything was fine. They said Peace, peace, when there was no peace. They were not even ashamed. God wanted his people to hear the truth and turn back.

Jeremiah 6 · Grade 4

Stand at the Crossroads

Name Date

Read and Think

God warned Jerusalem that an army was coming from the north. It was a serious warning, and God did not want it ignored. In verse 16 he gave a picture anyone could understand. A traveler at a crossroads stops, looks, and asks which road is the good one. God's people were to ask for the old paths, the good way he had shown their fathers.

The promise was rest for their souls. Sadly, the people answered that they would not walk in it. God set watchmen to blow the trumpet, and again the people refused to listen. Their ears were closed, and the word of Yahweh had become something they mocked.

Part of the problem came from the leaders. Prophets and priests treated the hurt of the people lightly. They said Peace, peace, when there was no peace. A comforting message that is not true cannot heal anyone.

  2. What did God promise to those who walked in it?

  3. How did the people answer the watchmen?

  4. Why was Peace, peace a problem?

Jeremiah 6 · Grade 5

Rest for Your Souls

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 6 sounds an alarm. Jerusalem was told to flee and to blow the trumpet, because disaster was looking out from the north. The army is described as cruel and without mercy. The warning was meant to bring people to their senses while there was still time.

At the center of the chapter is an invitation. Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths. The image is of a traveler at a crossroads who stops to ask which path is good. The old paths were not simply old habits. They were the covenant ways God had taught Israel, and walking in them would bring rest for their souls. Yet the people answered that they would not walk in it.

Jeremiah also exposed a deeper sickness. From the least to the greatest, people were greedy for gain, and prophet and priest dealt falsely. They healed the hurt of the people superficially, saying Peace, peace, when there is no peace. God compared Jeremiah to a tester of metals, and the result was rejected silver that would not be refined.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the crossroads image teach?

  2. What were the old paths?

  3. How had the leaders treated the people's hurt?

  4. What did the metal test show?
