Jeremiah 6 · Grade 5
Rest for Your Souls
Read and Think
Jeremiah 6 sounds an alarm. Jerusalem was told to flee and to blow the trumpet, because disaster was looking out from the north. The army is described as cruel and without mercy. The warning was meant to bring people to their senses while there was still time.
At the center of the chapter is an invitation. Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths. The image is of a traveler at a crossroads who stops to ask which path is good. The old paths were not simply old habits. They were the covenant ways God had taught Israel, and walking in them would bring rest for their souls. Yet the people answered that they would not walk in it.
Jeremiah also exposed a deeper sickness. From the least to the greatest, people were greedy for gain, and prophet and priest dealt falsely. They healed the hurt of the people superficially, saying Peace, peace, when there is no peace. God compared Jeremiah to a tester of metals, and the result was rejected silver that would not be refined.
