Hope at the End

Read the Story

King Zedekiah did what was evil in God's sight. The army of Babylon came against Jerusalem. After a long time, they broke into the city. Zedekiah was taken to the king of Babylon.

Babylon's captain burned God's house and the king's house. He broke down the walls. He carried many people away to Babylon. But he left some of the poorest people to take care of vineyards and fields.

Many years later, King Jehoiachin of Judah was still in prison in Babylon. A new king named Evilmerodach set him free. He spoke kindly to him. Jehoiachin ate at the king's table every day for the rest of his life. God had not forgotten his promise to David's family.

Memory Verse

“In the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the twenty-fifth day of the month, Evilmerodach king of Babylon, in the first year of his reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and released him from prison.”

The Last Word Is Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 52 is an extra history at the end of the book. It is much like 2 Kings 24 and 25. It shows that what Jeremiah warned about came true. Zedekiah rebelled against Babylon. The army of Babylon camped around Jerusalem for about a year and a half. Then the walls were broken. Zedekiah ran, but he was caught and taken to Babylon in chains.

Nebuzaradan burned the temple, the palace, and the great houses. He broke down the walls. The bronze pillars and the temple tools were carried to Babylon. The chapter counts the people taken away at three different times.

The last scene comes many years later. Evilmerodach, the new king of Babylon, released Jehoiachin from prison. He spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings who were with him. Jehoiachin ate at the king's table for the rest of his life. David's line was still alive, and God's promise was still standing.

  2. How does a small sign of hope help people in a long, hard time?

Jeremiah 52 · Grade 5

David's Line Still Alive

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 52 is an appendix, nearly identical to 2 Kings 24:18 to 25:30. It shows that Jeremiah's words were fulfilled exactly. Zedekiah did that which was evil in Yahweh's sight, according to all that Jehoiakim had done. The city was besieged from the ninth year to the eleventh year of King Zedekiah, when the city was broken up (52:4-7). Zedekiah was captured on the plains of Jericho and judged harshly by Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah.

The account of the temple's destruction is detailed and sad. The two bronze pillars, Jachin and Boaz, the bronze sea, and the vessels Solomon had made were broken and carried away. The careful list underlines that the glory of Solomon's temple was gone. Three deportations are counted, totaling 4,600 people.

Yet the book closes on a surprising note. In the thirty-seventh year of Jehoiachin's exile, Evilmerodach lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and released him from prison. He received a seat of honor and a daily allowance for life. This was not the full restoration Jeremiah had promised, but it was a sign that God had kept David's line alive. David's line was still alive, which Christians have read as pointing ahead to the righteous Branch God had promised. In the New Testament, Jesus is born from David's line (Matthew 1:1).
