Jeremiah 51 · Grade 3

A Stone in the Euphrates

Name Date

Read the Story

God's message about Babylon went on. Babylon was rich and strong. But its idols were made by people. There was no breath in them.

Yahweh is not like them. He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom. He sends rain, lightning, and wind. God told his people to leave Babylon and remember Jerusalem.

Jeremiah wrote the whole message in a book. He gave it to Seraiah, who was going to Babylon. Seraiah read the words there. Then he tied a stone to the book and threw it into the river Euphrates. It sank, and Babylon would sink like that and not rise again.

Memory Verse

“He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom. By his understanding he has stretched out the heavens.

Jeremiah 51 · Grade 4

Creator, Not Idol

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 51 continues the great message against Babylon. Babylon was like a golden cup in God's hand that had made the nations drunk. Now it would suddenly fall. Even its gods would be shamed. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his image, for his molten images are falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

Against those empty idols, Jeremiah praised the living God. He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom. By his understanding he has stretched out the heavens. The portion of Jacob is not like these, for he formed all things.

God called his people out. My people, go away from the middle of her. They were to remember Yahweh from afar and let Jerusalem come into their minds. The chapter ends with a sign. Seraiah read Jeremiah's scroll in Babylon, tied a stone to it, and cast it into the Euphrates. Thus will Babylon sink, and will not rise again.

Jeremiah 51 · Grade 5

Thus Far the Words of Jeremiah

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 51 completes the oracle against Babylon. God would stir up the kings of the Medes against it. Babylon had been a golden cup in Yahweh's hand, making the nations drunk; now it would fall suddenly. The wide walls of Babylon would be utterly overthrown (51:58).

At the center stands a hymn to the Creator, repeated from chapter 10. He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom. Babylon's idols, crafted by goldsmiths, have no breath in them. In contrast, the portion of Jacob is not like these, for he formed all things. The contest was never between Judah and Babylon, but between the living God and empty idols.

The book's last prophetic act is dated to Zedekiah's fourth year. Seraiah, Baruch's brother, carried a scroll of this oracle to Babylon, read it aloud, tied a stone to it, and threw it into the Euphrates. The sinking scroll pictured Babylon's end. The chapter closes with a quiet note: Thus far are the words of Jeremiah. In the New Testament, Revelation 18 echoes this scene when an angel throws a great millstone into the sea to picture the fall of Babylon the great.

  2. Which earlier chapter does the Creator hymn repeat?
