Jeremiah 51 · Grade 5
Thus Far the Words of Jeremiah
Read and Think
Jeremiah 51 completes the oracle against Babylon. God would stir up the kings of the Medes against it. Babylon had been a golden cup in Yahweh's hand, making the nations drunk; now it would fall suddenly. The wide walls of Babylon would be utterly overthrown (51:58).
At the center stands a hymn to the Creator, repeated from chapter 10. He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom. Babylon's idols, crafted by goldsmiths, have no breath in them. In contrast, the portion of Jacob is not like these, for he formed all things. The contest was never between Judah and Babylon, but between the living God and empty idols.
The book's last prophetic act is dated to Zedekiah's fourth year. Seraiah, Baruch's brother, carried a scroll of this oracle to Babylon, read it aloud, tied a stone to it, and threw it into the Euphrates. The sinking scroll pictured Babylon's end. The chapter closes with a quiet note: Thus far are the words of Jeremiah. In the New Testament, Revelation 18 echoes this scene when an angel throws a great millstone into the sea to picture the fall of Babylon the great.
