Babylon Will Fall

Name Date

Read the Story

Babylon was the great empire that took God's people away. But God said Babylon would fall too. It was proud, and it was cruel to God's people.

God's people had been like lost sheep. Their shepherds led them astray on the mountains. They forgot their resting place. But God said they would come home. They would cry and seek Yahweh their God.

God promised to bring Israel back to good pastures, like sheep on green hills. In those days, God said, people would look for Israel's sin, and there would be none. God would pardon the people he kept as a remnant.

Memory Verse

“In those days, and in that time,” says Yahweh, “the iniquity of Israel will be sought for, and there will be none, also the sins of Judah, and they won’t be found; for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.”

Jeremiah 50 · Grade 4

A Redeemer Who Is Strong

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapters 50 and 51 are the longest oracle in Jeremiah, and they are about Babylon. The empire God used to discipline Judah would itself be judged for its pride. Behold, a people comes from the north. Babylon had been the hammer of the whole earth, but now the hammer would be broken.

Alongside judgment on Babylon, God promised restoration for his people. Israel and Judah would return together, weeping and seeking God. They would say, Come, and join yourselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten. Though they had been lost sheep, God would bring them back to their pasture.

God promised complete forgiveness. The iniquity of Israel would be sought, and there would be none. Their Redeemer is strong. Yahweh of Armies is his name. God would plead their cause and bring rest.

Memory Verse

Jeremiah 50 · Grade 5

The Hammer Broken

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 50 and 51 form a massive oracle against Babylon, the climax of the prophecies to the nations. For decades Jeremiah had told Judah to submit to Babylon. Now he announced that Babylon too would answer to God. Babylon had served as God's instrument, but it went far beyond its task with arrogance and cruelty. How the hammer of the whole earth is cut apart and broken!

The judgment on Babylon is woven with promises of a new exodus. Israel and Judah, divided for many years, would come together, weeping and seeking Yahweh. They would join themselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant, echoing the new covenant of chapter 31. Israel is a hunted sheep, scattered by Assyria and then Babylon, but God would bring Israel again to his pasture.

The chapter's high point is forgiveness. The iniquity of Israel will be sought for, and there will be none, also the sins of Judah, and they won't be found; for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant. God is named as Israel's strong Redeemer, a kinsman who takes up a family member's cause. Jeremiah 51 names the kings of the Medes as the ones God would stir up against Babylon (51:11).

Show What You Know

  1. Why was Babylon judged though it was God's instrument?

  2. What earlier chapter does the everlasting covenant echo?

  3. What is a redeemer?

  4. What is God named in this chapter?
