Jeremiah 50 · Grade 5

The Hammer Broken

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 50 and 51 form a massive oracle against Babylon, the climax of the prophecies to the nations. For decades Jeremiah had told Judah to submit to Babylon. Now he announced that Babylon too would answer to God. Babylon had served as God's instrument, but it went far beyond its task with arrogance and cruelty. How the hammer of the whole earth is cut apart and broken!

The judgment on Babylon is woven with promises of a new exodus. Israel and Judah, divided for many years, would come together, weeping and seeking Yahweh. They would join themselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant, echoing the new covenant of chapter 31. Israel is a hunted sheep, scattered by Assyria and then Babylon, but God would bring Israel again to his pasture.

The chapter's high point is forgiveness. The iniquity of Israel will be sought for, and there will be none, also the sins of Judah, and they won't be found; for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant. God is named as Israel's strong Redeemer, a kinsman who takes up a family member's cause. Jeremiah 51 names the kings of the Medes as the ones God would stir up against Babylon (51:11).
