One Who Seeks Truth

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Jeremiah to run through the streets of Jerusalem. He was to look for one person who did justly and sought truth. If he found one, God would pardon the city.

Jeremiah thought maybe the poor people did not know God's way. So he went to the great men. But they had also broken away from God. Their faces were harder than a rock.

God reminded the people that he set the sand as a border for the sea. The waves roar, but they cannot pass it. God also gives the rain in its season. But the people did not stop to fear him. Even so, God said he would not make a full end of them.

Memory Verse

Jeremiah 5 · Grade 4

God Who Gives Rain

Name Date

Read and Think

God sent Jeremiah on a search. He was to run through the streets of Jerusalem and look in its wide places for anyone who did justly and sought truth. If one could be found, God would pardon the city. But the people refused correction and made their faces harder than a rock.

Jeremiah first thought only the poor were foolish, since they might not know the law. So he went to the great men, who knew God's way. They too had broken the yoke and burst the bonds. They even said that trouble would never come to them.

God called them foolish people who have eyes but don't see and ears but don't hear. He pointed to the sea. God placed the sand as its boundary, and though the waves roar they cannot pass. He gives the former and latter rain and the weeks of harvest. Yet some people grew rich by deceit and did not defend the fatherless or the needy. Even so, God promised not to make a full end.

Jeremiah 5 · Grade 5

The Sand for the Bound of the Sea

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 5 opens with a search reminiscent of Abraham's plea for Sodom, but with even lower odds. God told Jeremiah to run through Jerusalem's streets to find a single person who does justly and seeks truth; if one were found, God would pardon the city. The people swore As Yahweh lives, but they swore falsely. They had been corrected and refused to return.

Jeremiah assumed the poor were simply uninformed and went to the great men, who knew the law. They proved no better, having broken the yoke of God's rule. The people even denied that judgment would come, and treated the prophets as empty wind. God answered that his words in Jeremiah's mouth would be like fire, and a distant nation with an unknown language would come. Yet even then he would not make a full end of them.

The chapter's center is a call to awe. God described foolish people with eyes that don't see and ears that don't hear. He is the one who placed sand as a perpetual boundary for the sea. He gives the former and latter rain and preserves the weeks of harvest. Their sins had withheld these good things. Leaders grew rich by deceit and neglected the fatherless and needy, prophets prophesied falsely, priests ruled by their own authority, and the people loved to have it so.

Show What You Know

  1. What was the condition for pardoning Jerusalem?

  2. Why did Jeremiah go to the great men?

  3. How does the sea's boundary illustrate God's power?

  4. Which groups does the chapter say had failed at the end?
