Jeremiah 5 · Grade 4
God Who Gives Rain
Read and Think
God sent Jeremiah on a search. He was to run through the streets of Jerusalem and look in its wide places for anyone who did justly and sought truth. If one could be found, God would pardon the city. But the people refused correction and made their faces harder than a rock.
Jeremiah first thought only the poor were foolish, since they might not know the law. So he went to the great men, who knew God's way. They too had broken the yoke and burst the bonds. They even said that trouble would never come to them.
God called them foolish people who have eyes but don't see and ears but don't hear. He pointed to the sea. God placed the sand as its boundary, and though the waves roar they cannot pass. He gives the former and latter rain and the weeks of harvest. Yet some people grew rich by deceit and did not defend the fatherless or the needy. Even so, God promised not to make a full end.
