What Can't Save Us

Name Date

Read the Story

God gave Jeremiah messages for many nations. Ammon trusted in its treasures. Edom was known for its wise men and for living high in the rocks. Damascus was a great city. Kedar and Hazor lived in tents in the desert, and Elam was known for its bowmen.

God said none of these things could keep them safe. Edom had made its nest high like an eagle, but God would bring it down. Wise people, riches, and strong armies could not stand against God.

In the middle of these messages, God spoke tenderly. Leave your fatherless children. I will preserve them alive. Let your widows trust in me. God also promised that he would one day bring back the fortunes of Ammon and Elam.

Memory Verse

Leave your fatherless children. I will preserve them alive. Let your widows trust in me.”

Jeremiah 49 · Grade 4

False Securities

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 49 gathers short oracles against Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Kedar and Hazor, and Elam. Each nation had its own source of confidence. Ammon trusted in its treasures and had taken land that belonged to Israel's tribe of Gad. Edom prided itself on wisdom and on its cliffside strongholds.

God told Edom that the pride of its heart had deceived it. Though it made its nest as high as the eagle, God would bring it down. Damascus would lose its courage. The desert tribes of Kedar and Hazor, who felt safe without gates or bars, would be scattered. Elam's famous bow would be broken.

Two threads of grace run through the chapter. God promised to care for the vulnerable. I will preserve them alive. Let your widows trust in me. He also promised to reverse the captivity of Ammon and Elam in the latter days. Even in judgment, God's mercy was not finished.

  2. What had deceived Edom?

Jeremiah 49 · Grade 5

The Lord of All Peoples

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 49 surveys Judah's neighbors in every direction. Ammon to the east had seized Gad's territory. Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Edom to the south, descended from Esau, was famous for wisdom, especially in Teman. Is wisdom no more in Teman? Damascus to the north, Kedar and Hazor in the Arabian desert, and Elam far to the east beyond Babylon complete the circle.

Each nation stood for a different false security. Ammon trusted wealth, Edom trusted its cliffside strongholds and wisdom, the desert tribes trusted their isolation, and Elam trusted its archers. God dismantled each one. The Edom oracle closely parallels the book of Obadiah, which also condemns Edom's pride and its cruelty to Judah.

Yet the chapter refuses to end in despair. God showed his character as the protector of the weak. Leave your fatherless children. I will preserve them alive. Let your widows trust in me. And God promised that he would restore Ammon and Elam in the latter days. In the New Testament, Elamites were among those present in Jerusalem at Pentecost (Acts 2:9), an early sign of God's mercy reaching the nations.

Show What You Know

  1. From whom was Edom descended?

  2. Which book closely parallels the Edom oracle?

  3. What false security did the desert tribes have?

  4. Where do Elamites appear in the New Testament?
