Jeremiah 48 · Grade 4
Settled Like Wine
Read and Think
Jeremiah 48 is one of the longest oracles against the nations. Moab lay east of the Dead Sea. It was proud and had trusted in its works and in its treasures. Its god Chemosh would go into captivity with his priests.
God used a vivid picture. Moab had been at ease from its youth, like wine that had settled on its dregs and had never been poured from vessel to vessel. It had never been shaken, so its pride had never been challenged. We have heard of the pride of Moab. He is very proud in his loftiness.
Yet the chapter is full of grief. God said he would wail for Moab. His heart would sound for Moab like flutes. And the last word is mercy. In the latter days, God would reverse the captivity of Moab. God's judgment and compassion stand side by side.
