The Sword That Cannot Rest

Name Date

Read the Story

God gave Jeremiah a message about the Philistines. They lived in cities by the sea, like Gaza and Ashkelon. They had been enemies of Israel for a long time.

God said trouble would come from the north like rising waters. It would cover the land like a stream that overflows its banks. The people would cry out.

Then someone asked the sword of Yahweh how long it would be before it was quiet. They begged it to go back into its scabbard and rest. But it could not rest yet, because God had given it a command.

Memory Verse

“‘You sword of Yahweh, how long will it be before you are quiet? Put yourself back into your scabbard; rest, and be still.’

The Philistines

Name Date

Read and Think

The Philistines lived along the Mediterranean coast in cities such as Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ashdod. Since the days of Samson and David they had been Israel's rivals. Jeremiah's message came before Pharaoh struck Gaza.

God pictured the coming army as waters rising out of the north, an overflowing stream. The sound of horses and chariots would be so terrifying that fathers would not even look back. Tyre and Sidon, the Philistines' allies, would lose their helpers.

The chapter ends with a cry. You sword of Yahweh, how long will it be before you are quiet? The answer came back that the sword could not rest, since Yahweh had given it a command. Even Israel's oldest enemies were under God's rule, and his judgment would come in his time.

  1. Where did the Philistines live?

  2. Since whose days had they been Israel's rivals?

  3. How did God picture the coming army?

Jeremiah 47 · Grade 5

The Sword of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 47 is a brief oracle against Philistia, the coastal confederation of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath. The Philistines had come from Caphtor (47:4), and had troubled Israel since the time of the judges. The message is dated before Pharaoh struck Gaza.

The invader from the north is Babylon. Its army is compared to an overflowing flood, a common prophetic image for overwhelming military power. Panic is so great that fathers abandon their children in flight. The Philistines' trading partners in Tyre and Sidon would find no helpers.

The final lines turn into a dramatic dialogue. You sword of Yahweh, how long will it be before you are quiet? Put yourself back into your scabbard; rest, and be still. The reply is that the sword cannot rest while God's command remains. Babylon was only a tool. The real actor was God, and his judgment would not stop until his purpose was done.

Show What You Know

  1. Where did the Philistines originally come from?

  2. What is the overflowing flood an image of?

  3. Which two cities would be left without helpers?

  4. Who is the real actor behind Babylon?
