Proud Egypt

Name Date

Read the Story

Jeremiah's book now gives God's messages about the nations. The first is about Egypt. Egypt's army went to fight Babylon by the river Euphrates at a place called Carchemish.

Egypt was proud. It wanted to rise up like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge, and cover the earth. But the battle was the Lord's. Egypt's army was turned back.

God said Babylon would come and strike Egypt. Then God spoke to his own people. God told Jacob, his servant, not to be afraid. God would save them from afar. Jacob would return and be quiet and at ease.

Memory Verse

“But don’t you be afraid, Jacob my servant. Don’t be dismayed, Israel; for, behold, I will save you from afar, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob will return, and will be quiet and at ease. No one will make him afraid.

Jeremiah 46 · Grade 4

The Battle of Carchemish

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapters 46 to 51 are God's messages to the nations. God called Jeremiah to be a prophet to the nations, and these chapters show that he rules them all. The first message concerns Egypt, the great power Judah often trusted instead of God.

In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, Pharaoh Necoh's army met Nebuchadnezzar at Carchemish on the Euphrates. Egypt rose up like the Nile in flood, but God turned its warriors back. Go up into Gilead, and take balm, God mocked; there would be no healing for Egypt's army. Later Babylon would invade Egypt itself.

The chapter ends with comfort. God told Jacob his servant not to be afraid. God would correct his people in measure, but he would not make a full end of them. Though the nations would fall, God's people had a future because of his promise.

Jeremiah 46 · Grade 5

Lord of the Nations

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah was appointed a prophet to the nations (1:5), and chapters 46 to 51 gather his oracles against Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Kedar, Hazor, Elam, and finally Babylon. Egypt comes first because it was the power Judah most often leaned on instead of God.

The first oracle concerns the army of Pharaoh Necoh, which Nebuchadnezzar struck at Carchemish in the fourth year of Jehoiakim (46:2). Egypt rose like the Nile in flood, boasting that it would cover the earth. Then the question comes: Why are your strong ones swept away? They didn't stand, because Yahweh pushed them. A second oracle foretold Nebuchadnezzar's later invasion of Egypt. Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he has let the appointed time pass by.

The chapter closes with words also found in chapter 30. Don't be afraid, O Jacob my servant, says Yahweh, for I am with you. God would bring the nations to an end, but not his people. He would discipline them justly, but he would preserve them. The oracles against the nations are not only about judgment. They also assure God's people that no empire can stand against his purposes.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Egypt come first among the nations?

  2. What happened at Carchemish?

  3. What did people cry about Pharaoh?

  4. What do the oracles assure God's people?
