Jeremiah 46 · Grade 4
The Battle of Carchemish
Read and Think
Chapters 46 to 51 are God's messages to the nations. God called Jeremiah to be a prophet to the nations, and these chapters show that he rules them all. The first message concerns Egypt, the great power Judah often trusted instead of God.
In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, Pharaoh Necoh's army met Nebuchadnezzar at Carchemish on the Euphrates. Egypt rose up like the Nile in flood, but God turned its warriors back. Go up into Gilead, and take balm, God mocked; there would be no healing for Egypt's army. Later Babylon would invade Egypt itself.
The chapter ends with comfort. God told Jacob his servant not to be afraid. God would correct his people in measure, but he would not make a full end of them. Though the nations would fall, God's people had a future because of his promise.
