Whose Word Will Stand?

Name Date

Read the Story

God's word came to Jeremiah for all the Jews living in Egypt. God reminded them what happened to Jerusalem. He had sent his servants the prophets again and again. But they did not listen. They kept burning incense to other gods.

Now in Egypt they were doing the same thing. Jeremiah spoke to all the people. A great crowd answered him. They said they would not listen to the word he spoke in God's name.

They said they would keep burning incense to the queen of the sky. Jeremiah told them that this was why trouble had come. They had not obeyed God's voice or walked in his law. God said that they would know whose word would stand, his or theirs.

Memory Verse

Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed Yahweh’s voice, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil has happened to you, as it is today.”

The Queen of the Sky

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah's last recorded message was to the Jews scattered in Egypt, at Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memphis, and Pathros. God reminded them that Jerusalem lay in ruins because of idolatry. He had sent prophets, rising up early and sending them. But they didn't listen and didn't incline their ear.

In Egypt they were burning incense to other gods again. God asked why they would bring more harm on themselves. They were not humbled even after all that had happened.

The people answered with open defiance. They claimed that life had been better when they worshiped the queen of the sky, a goddess of the heavens. They blamed their troubles on stopping, not on turning from God. Jeremiah said the opposite was true. The evil had come because they burned incense and sinned against Yahweh and did not obey his voice.

Jeremiah 44 · Grade 5

A Final Defiance

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 44 contains Jeremiah's last recorded prophecy, spoken to Jewish communities across Egypt. God began with history. Jerusalem and Judah were desolate because of idolatry. However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Oh, don't do this abominable thing that I hate. Yet even in Egypt, the survivors had returned to the same sin.

The response was the boldest rejection in the book. The men and women declared that they would continue offering to the queen of the sky. They argued that when they worshiped her in Judah, they had plenty of food and saw no evil. They said that since they stopped burning incense to the queen of the sky, they had lacked all things (44:18).

Jeremiah answered that they had it backward. The disaster came because of their idolatry, not because they abandoned it. God gave a sign. Pharaoh Hophra would be handed to his enemies, just as Zedekiah had been. The question would be settled by events. The people would know whose word would stand, God's or theirs. The chapter shows how a hardened heart can twist experience to justify sin.
