Stones at Pharaoh's House

Name Date

Read the Story

When Jeremiah finished speaking, some proud men said he was not telling the truth. They said God had not sent him. They blamed Baruch for turning Jeremiah against them.

So Johanan and the captains did not obey God's voice to stay in Judah. They took all the people, even Jeremiah and Baruch, and went to Egypt. They came to a city called Tahpanhes.

There God told Jeremiah to take great stones. He hid them in the brickwork at the entry of Pharaoh's house. The men of Judah watched. God said that the king of Babylon would come and set his throne on those very stones.

Memory Verse

“They came into the land of Egypt, for they didn’t obey Yahweh’s voice; and they came to Tahpanhes.”

No Escape from God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Azariah, Johanan, and all the proud men answered Jeremiah. You speak falsely. They claimed Baruch had turned Jeremiah against them so they would be handed to Babylon. Their pride led them to reject the answer they had asked for.

Johanan and the captains took the whole remnant to Egypt. They brought the king's daughters, the poor, and even Jeremiah and Baruch. They came into the land of Egypt, for they didn't obey Yahweh's voice; and they came to Tahpanhes.

At Tahpanhes, Jeremiah buried large stones in the pavement at the entry of Pharaoh's palace as an acted prophecy. Nebuchadnezzar would one day set up his royal tent on that spot. Egypt's temples would burn and its sacred pillars would be broken. The place the people chose for safety would also face Babylon.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the proud men claim about Baruch?

  2. Who was taken to Egypt?

  3. What did the buried stones show?

  4. What would happen to Egypt?

Think About It

  1. Why might pride make it hard to accept God's answer?

  2. Jeremiah went to Egypt with people who rejected him. What does that show about his love for them?

Jeremiah 43 · Grade 5

Running from the Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 43 records the remnant's final rejection of God's word in the land of promise. The leaders accused Jeremiah of lying and blamed Baruch. Pride, the text says, drove them. Earlier they had prayed that Yahweh would be a true and faithful witness among them. Now that witness stood against them.

They marched the remnant to Tahpanhes. Jeremiah and Baruch were forced to go along. The journey reversed the exodus. Israel's history began with God bringing his people out of Egypt, and now the last remnant of Judah went back there in unbelief.

In Egypt Jeremiah performed one more sign. He hid stones in the mortar at the entrance of Pharaoh's building, in the sight of the men of Judah, and declared that Nebuchadnezzar would set his throne over them. The lesson is sobering. No place on earth is safe from God's word, and fleeing obedience never leads to real security.

Show What You Know

  1. What drove the leaders to reject God's word?

  2. Where did they take the remnant?

  3. How did the journey reverse the exodus?

  4. Whose throne did Jeremiah say would be set over the hidden stones?
