Jeremiah 43 · Grade 5
Running from the Word
Read and Think
Jeremiah 43 records the remnant's final rejection of God's word in the land of promise. The leaders accused Jeremiah of lying and blamed Baruch. Pride, the text says, drove them. Earlier they had prayed that Yahweh would be a true and faithful witness among them. Now that witness stood against them.
They marched the remnant to Tahpanhes. Jeremiah and Baruch were forced to go along. The journey reversed the exodus. Israel's history began with God bringing his people out of Egypt, and now the last remnant of Judah went back there in unbelief.
In Egypt Jeremiah performed one more sign. He hid stones in the mortar at the entrance of Pharaoh's building, in the sight of the men of Judah, and declared that Nebuchadnezzar would set his throne over them. The lesson is sobering. No place on earth is safe from God's word, and fleeing obedience never leads to real security.
