A Promise to Obey

Name Date

Read the Story

All the captains and the people came to Jeremiah. They asked him to pray to God for them. They wanted God to show them the way they should walk. They promised to obey God's voice whether the answer was good or bad.

After ten days, God's word came to Jeremiah. God said that if they would still live in the land, he would build them up and not pull them down. He told them not to be afraid of the king of Babylon. God was with them to save them.

But God also warned them. If they went to Egypt to get away, the trouble they were afraid of would follow them there. Jeremiah told them they had not been honest. They had asked, but they were not really ready to obey.

Memory Verse

“Don’t be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. Don’t be afraid of him,’ says Yahweh, ‘for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.”

Asking with a Divided Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

After Gedaliah's death, the remnant gathered near Bethlehem and came to Jeremiah. They asked him to pray to God for them. Their promise sounded wholehearted. Whether it is good, or whether it is bad, we will obey the voice of Yahweh our God.

Jeremiah waited ten days for the answer. God's answer was full of comfort. If they stayed in Judah, God would build them and plant them. Don't be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. God promised to show mercy and make Nebuchadnezzar show mercy too.

Then came a warning. If they insisted on fleeing to Egypt, the very sword and famine they feared would overtake them there. Jeremiah sensed that they had already decided. He told them they had deceived themselves by asking for a word they did not intend to follow.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the remnant promise?

  2. How long did Jeremiah wait for an answer?

  3. What would God do if they stayed in Judah?

Jeremiah 42 · Grade 5

The Test of Obedience

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 42 is a story about asking God for direction. The remnant, led by Johanan, approached Jeremiah with what sounded like deep humility. They asked that Yahweh your God may show us the way in which we should walk, and the things that we should do. They even called on God as a witness against them if they failed to obey.

Jeremiah sought God for ten days, a delay that tested their patience. The answer echoed the language of Jeremiah's call in chapter 1. If they stayed, God would build them and plant them. God said he grieved over the disaster he had brought. Don't be afraid of him, says Yahweh, for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand. God promised mercy from Nebuchadnezzar and a return to their land.

But Egypt represented safety, food, and freedom from war in their minds. God warned that Egypt would bring the very sword, famine, and pestilence they sought to escape. Jeremiah exposed the problem. They had asked hoping God would approve the plan they already had. True guidance requires a heart willing to obey even when God's answer is not the one a person wants.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the remnant call on God to be?

  2. How did God's answer echo Jeremiah's call?

  3. What did Egypt represent in their minds?

  4. What does true guidance require?
