Jeremiah 42 · Grade 4
Asking with a Divided Heart
Read and Think
After Gedaliah's death, the remnant gathered near Bethlehem and came to Jeremiah. They asked him to pray to God for them. Their promise sounded wholehearted. Whether it is good, or whether it is bad, we will obey the voice of Yahweh our God.
Jeremiah waited ten days for the answer. God's answer was full of comfort. If they stayed in Judah, God would build them and plant them. Don't be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. God promised to show mercy and make Nebuchadnezzar show mercy too.
Then came a warning. If they insisted on fleeing to Egypt, the very sword and famine they feared would overtake them there. Jeremiah sensed that they had already decided. He told them they had deceived themselves by asking for a word they did not intend to follow.
