Jeremiah 4 · Grade 4

Hearts Like Hard Ground

Name Date

Read and Think

God promised that if Israel would return and put away their idols, they would swear by him in truth, justice and righteousness, and the nations would bless themselves in him. Then he spoke to Judah and Jerusalem with a farming picture. They must break up their fallow ground and not sow among thorns. Their hearts had become hard and crowded with weeds.

God called them to wash their hearts from wickedness so they could be saved. If they would not, trouble would come from the north like a lion leaving its thicket. The enemy would come up like clouds, with chariots like a whirlwind and horses swifter than eagles.

Jeremiah felt this deeply. He cried out that his heart was pained and trembling. God said his people were foolish children who knew how to do evil but not how to do good. Jeremiah saw a vision of the land empty and dark, the mountains trembling and the birds gone. Yet God said, I will not make a full end.

Jeremiah 4 · Grade 5

I Will Not Make a Full End

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with a conditional promise. If Israel would return and put away their abominations, they would swear As Yahweh lives in truth, justice and righteousness, and the nations would bless themselves in him. Faithfulness in God's people was meant to become a blessing to the world.

Then comes an agricultural command. Break up your fallow ground, and don't sow among thorns. Unplowed ground is hard and choked with weeds, and seed sown there is wasted. God also spoke of circumcising the heart, an image of inner devotion rather than an outward sign only, and called Jerusalem to wash its heart from wickedness. The alternative was judgment from the north, pictured as a lion from its thicket, storm clouds, and chariots like a whirlwind.

Jeremiah's response is one of the most personal passages in the prophets. In verse 19 he cries, My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart! He then described a vision in the language of Genesis 1 reversed. The earth was waste and void, the heavens had no light, the mountains trembled, no man remained, and the birds had fled. Yet in the middle of this vision God declares, The whole land will be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.

Show What You Know

  1. How was Israel's faithfulness meant to affect the nations?

  2. What does circumcising the heart picture?

  3. How does Jeremiah's vision echo Genesis 1?

  4. What limit did God place on the judgment?
