Faithful Under Pressure

Read and Think

Zedekiah was made king by Nebuchadnezzar. But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, listened to Yahweh's words. When Egypt's army marched out, the Babylonians pulled back from Jerusalem. Zedekiah hoped the danger was over and asked Jeremiah to pray. God's answer was clear. The Babylonians would return and take the city.

During the pause, Jeremiah left to handle family business in Benjamin. A guard accused him of defecting to the Babylonians. Jeremiah denied it, but the princes beat him and locked him in a dungeon in a scribe's house, where he stayed many days.

Zedekiah secretly brought him out and asked for a word from God. Jeremiah did not soften the message. You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. Then he asked how he had sinned to be put in prison. Zedekiah moved him to the court of the guard and gave him bread daily until the bread in the city was gone.
