Read the Story

King Zedekiah and his servants did not listen to God's words. Still, he asked Jeremiah to pray for the people. Babylon's army left Jerusalem for a time, but God said they would come back.

Jeremiah went out to go to the land of Benjamin. A guard at the gate said he was going over to the enemy. Jeremiah said that this was false! But the princes were angry and put him in prison for many days.

Then the king sent for Jeremiah and asked him secretly, Is there any word from Yahweh? Jeremiah said, There is. He said the king would be given to the king of Babylon. Jeremiah asked not to go back to the prison. The king put him in the court of the guard. He gave him a loaf of bread each day.
