The Words Come Back

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Jeremiah to take a scroll and write all the words God had spoken to him. Maybe the people would hear and turn from their evil way. Then God would forgive them. Jeremiah spoke the words, and Baruch wrote them down.

Baruch read the scroll in God's house. Some princes heard it and were afraid. They told Baruch and Jeremiah to go and hide. Then they told the king.

The king sat by a fire. When three or four columns were read, he cut them off and threw them into the fire. He was not afraid. But God hid Jeremiah and Baruch. God told Jeremiah to take another scroll and write all the words again. Many more words were added.

Memory Verse

It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I intend to do to them, that they may each return from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

A Scroll in the Fire

Name Date

Read and Think

In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, God told Jeremiah to write all his words on a scroll. The purpose was mercy. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I intend to do to them, that they may each return from his evil way. Since Jeremiah was barred from the temple, Baruch wrote as Jeremiah dictated and then read the scroll to the people on a fast day.

Micaiah son of Gemariah heard the reading and reported it to the princes. They asked Baruch to read it to them, and they turned in fear one toward another. They knew the king had to hear it, but they also told Baruch and Jeremiah to hide.

The king was sitting by a fire in his winter house. As each few columns were read, Jehoiakim cut them with a knife and threw them into the fire until the whole scroll was gone. The king and his servants were not afraid, and didn't tear their garments. But Yahweh hid them. God told Jeremiah to write the words again, and many similar words were added.

Jeremiah 36 · Grade 5

The Word That Cannot Be Burned

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 36 is set in the fourth year of Jehoiakim. God commanded Jeremiah to take a scroll and write in it all the words he had spoken. The goal was repentance, so that God could forgive their iniquity and their sin. Jeremiah dictated to Baruch the scribe. Because Jeremiah was restricted from entering the temple, Baruch read the scroll there on a fast day in the ninth month, when crowds had gathered.

The reading moved through levels of authority. Micaiah heard it and told the princes in the scribe's room. They summoned Baruch and asked how he wrote the words. He dictated all these words to me with his mouth. Alarmed, the princes advised Baruch and Jeremiah to hide, and then reported to the king.

The scene contrasts sharply with Josiah, Jehoiakim's father, who tore his clothes when he heard God's law read (2 Kings 22). Jehoiakim sat by his brazier, cut the scroll column by column, and burned it, ignoring officials who begged him not to. Yet God's word outlasted the fire. Jeremiah dictated a new scroll, and many similar words were added to them. The king could destroy a scroll, but he could not destroy God's word or escape its judgment.

Show What You Know

  1. What was God's goal in having the scroll written?

  2. How did Baruch explain the writing of the scroll?

  3. How did Jehoiakim's response contrast with Josiah's?

  4. What happened after the scroll was burned?
