Jeremiah 36 · Grade 5
The Word That Cannot Be Burned
Read and Think
Jeremiah 36 is set in the fourth year of Jehoiakim. God commanded Jeremiah to take a scroll and write in it all the words he had spoken. The goal was repentance, so that God could forgive their iniquity and their sin. Jeremiah dictated to Baruch the scribe. Because Jeremiah was restricted from entering the temple, Baruch read the scroll there on a fast day in the ninth month, when crowds had gathered.
The reading moved through levels of authority. Micaiah heard it and told the princes in the scribe's room. They summoned Baruch and asked how he wrote the words. He dictated all these words to me with his mouth. Alarmed, the princes advised Baruch and Jeremiah to hide, and then reported to the king.
The scene contrasts sharply with Josiah, Jehoiakim's father, who tore his clothes when he heard God's law read (2 Kings 22). Jehoiakim sat by his brazier, cut the scroll column by column, and burned it, ignoring officials who begged him not to. Yet God's word outlasted the fire. Jeremiah dictated a new scroll, and many similar words were added to them. The king could destroy a scroll, but he could not destroy God's word or escape its judgment.
