Obeying Their Father

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Jeremiah to go to the house of the Rechabites. He brought them into a room in God's house. He set bowls of wine in front of them and told them to drink.

They answered that they would drink no wine. Long ago Jonadab, their father, told them not to drink wine. He told them to live in tents and not build houses. They had obeyed his voice all their days.

God used them as a lesson for Judah. The Rechabites obeyed their father's commandment. But God had spoken to his people again and again, and they had not listened. God promised that the family of Jonadab would always have someone to stand before him.

Memory Verse

“The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab that he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed; and to this day they drink none, for they obey their father’s commandment; but I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking, and you have not listened to me.

Jeremiah 35 · Grade 4

A Lesson from the Rechabites

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter steps back to the days of Jehoiakim. God told Jeremiah to bring the Rechabite family into the temple and offer them wine. The Rechabites were a family who had joined Israel. They lived in tents and followed rules from their ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab.

When the bowls were set before them, they refused. Jonadab had commanded them to drink no wine, build no houses, and sow no fields, but to live in tents. Only the Babylonian invasion had driven them into Jerusalem for safety.

God used their example to shame Judah. The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab that he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed. The Rechabites kept a human father's rules. But Judah ignored the living God, who kept sending prophets to them. God blessed the Rechabites. Jonadab would never lack a man to stand before him.

Jeremiah 35 · Grade 5

Faithfulness as a Rebuke

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 35 is an acted parable set during Jehoiakim's reign, when Babylonian raids forced the Rechabites into Jerusalem. The Rechabites descended from Jonadab son of Rechab, who had joined Jehu's zeal against Baal worship. Jonadab commanded his descendants to live as nomads, drinking no wine and owning no houses, fields, or vineyards.

God told Jeremiah to bring them into a temple chamber and set wine before them. Their reply was firm. We will drink no wine; for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us. Jeremiah was not tempting them to sin; the point was to display their loyalty publicly, in the very house where Judah's leaders worshiped.

God drew the contrast sharply. A human ancestor's command had been obeyed for generations, yet God had spoken to Judah, rising up early and speaking, and they had not listened. The difference was not in the authority of the one who spoke, but in the hearts of those who heard. The Rechabites received a lasting blessing. Jonadab the son of Rechab will not lack a man to stand before me forever. Faithfulness to God's word, even in small things, is never forgotten.
