God promised to bring health and healing to the city. He would cleanse the people from all their sin and forgive them. The city would bring God joy and praise before all the nations.

The streets would again hear the voice of joy and gladness. People would bring thanks to God's house. They would say, Give thanks to Yahweh of Armies, for Yahweh is good. God also promised to cause a Branch of righteousness to grow up to David.

Great and Difficult Things

Name Date

Read and Think

While Jeremiah was still confined, God spoke to him again. God introduced himself as the one who made the earth and formed it. Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great and difficult things, which you don't know. The things were hard to imagine because the city was about to fall.

God promised healing after judgment. He would cure the city and reveal abundance of peace and truth. He would cleanse the people from all their iniquity and forgive all their sins. Jerusalem would become a name of joy, praise, and glory to God before all the nations of the earth.

In places that seemed empty, joyful sounds would return, including weddings and songs of thanks. Give thanks to Yahweh of Armies, for Yahweh is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. God repeated his promise of a Branch from David who would do justice. God's covenant with David was as sure as his covenant of day and night.

  2. What would God reveal to the city?

Jeremiah 33 · Grade 5

As Sure as Day and Night

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 33 continues the Book of Comfort with a second message to Jeremiah in the court of the guard. God introduced himself as Yahweh who does it, who forms it to establish it. Then came an invitation. Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great and difficult things, which you don't know.

God admitted the present reality. Houses were being torn down to defend the city against siege ramps, and the city would fall. But he promised to bring it health and healing. He would restore Judah and Israel, cleanse them from all their iniquity, and pardon their transgressions. The deserted streets would be filled again with the voice of joy and the voice of gladness and the song of worshipers bringing thanksgiving into Yahweh's house.

The chapter closes with promises about David's line and the priesthood. I will cause a Branch of righteousness to grow up to David. He will execute justice and righteousness in the land. This is the name by which she will be called: Yahweh our righteousness. Jerusalem shares the name given to the King in chapter 23. God tied these promises to creation. If his covenant of day and night could be broken, then his covenant with David could fail. Since day and night still follow each other, the promise stands.

Show What You Know

  1. Who does God say forms it to establish it?

  2. What would replace the silence of the streets?

  3. Which name is shared by the King in chapter 23 and Jerusalem here?

  4. How did God show that his promise to David was sure?
