Jeremiah 33 · Grade 5
As Sure as Day and Night
Read and Think
Jeremiah 33 continues the Book of Comfort with a second message to Jeremiah in the court of the guard. God introduced himself as Yahweh who does it, who forms it to establish it. Then came an invitation. Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great and difficult things, which you don't know.
God admitted the present reality. Houses were being torn down to defend the city against siege ramps, and the city would fall. But he promised to bring it health and healing. He would restore Judah and Israel, cleanse them from all their iniquity, and pardon their transgressions. The deserted streets would be filled again with the voice of joy and the voice of gladness and the song of worshipers bringing thanksgiving into Yahweh's house.
The chapter closes with promises about David's line and the priesthood. I will cause a Branch of righteousness to grow up to David. He will execute justice and righteousness in the land. This is the name by which she will be called: Yahweh our righteousness. Jerusalem shares the name given to the King in chapter 23. God tied these promises to creation. If his covenant of day and night could be broken, then his covenant with David could fail. Since day and night still follow each other, the promise stands.
