Jeremiah 30 · Grade 5
The Book of Comfort
Read and Think
Jeremiah 30 opens the section of the book often called the Book of Comfort, chapters 30 to 33. God told Jeremiah, Write all the words that I have spoken to you in a book. The promises looked ahead to a day when God would reverse the captivity of his people Israel and Judah. Both the northern and southern kingdoms were included in this hope.
The chapter does not pretend suffering is small. It pictures strong men gripped by terror, and calls the coming day the time of Jacob's trouble. But the trouble had a boundary. He will be saved out of it. God would break the foreign yoke, and his people would serve Yahweh their God and David their king, whom God would raise up. Christians have read this as pointing to the coming King from David's line.
God was honest about the cause of their pain. Their wound was grievous, the result of the greatness of their iniquity. Yet grace answered where no human doctor could. For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds. The outcast city would be rebuilt, filled with thanksgiving and children, and ruled by a prince from among them. The covenant formula sums up the goal. You shall be my people, and I will be your God.
