Israel and Judah were like sisters. Both of them turned away from God. Judah saw what happened to Israel. But Judah turned away too. Judah only pretended to come back.

God told Jeremiah to call toward the north. God said that he is merciful. He would not keep his anger forever. He asked the people to admit what they had done wrong.

God promised to give them shepherds after his own heart. These leaders would feed them with knowledge. God wanted them to call him My Father. He promised to heal them if they returned.

Jeremiah 3 · Grade 4

I Will Heal Your Backsliding

Name Date

Read and Think

In the days of King Josiah, God spoke to Jeremiah about two sisters, Israel and Judah. Israel, the northern kingdom, had turned from God, and God had sent her away. Judah, her sister, watched it happen. Yet Judah also turned away and came back only in pretense, not with her whole heart.

God told Jeremiah to proclaim toward the north that backsliding Israel should return. God would not look on them in anger, for he is merciful and would not keep anger forever. They only had to admit their wrong and that they had not obeyed his voice.

God promised that if they returned, he would give them shepherds after his own heart who would feed them with knowledge and understanding. All nations would gather to Jerusalem, called Yahweh's Throne. God longed to give them a pleasant land and wanted them to call him My Father. The chapter ends with the people admitting that they had sinned.

Jeremiah 3 · Grade 5

Return, You Backsliding Children

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 3 continues the courtroom case of chapter 2. God's people had broken faith with him. In the days of Josiah, God pointed to two sisters. Backsliding Israel, the northern kingdom, had been sent away. Treacherous Judah saw this, yet followed the same path and returned only in pretense. God concluded that Israel had shown herself more righteous than Judah.

Surprisingly, the response is an invitation. Jeremiah was to proclaim toward the north that Israel should return; God would not look in anger, for he is merciful and would not keep anger forever. The one requirement was honesty. They had to admit their iniquity and that they had not obeyed his voice. God promised shepherds according to his heart, a day when the ark would no longer be missed because Jerusalem itself would be called Yahweh's Throne, and a reunion of Judah and Israel.

The final verses form a model of repentance. God says, Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backsliding. The people answered that they had come to him, for he was Yahweh their God. They admitted that help from the hills was in vain and that their salvation was in Yahweh alone, and they confessed that they had sinned from their youth until that day.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God say Israel was more righteous than Judah?

  2. What was the one requirement God gave?

  3. What future did God promise in place of the ark?

  4. How does the chapter model repentance?
