Twenty-Three Years of Warnings

Name Date

Read the Story

Jeremiah had spoken God's word for twenty-three years. He had told the people early and often. But they had not listened.

God also sent his servants the prophets. They told the people to return from their evil ways. Then they could live in the land God gave their fathers. Still the people did not incline their ear.

God said the land would serve the king of Babylon seventy years. When the seventy years were done, God would judge Babylon too. God is patient, but he also keeps his word.

Seventy Years in Babylon

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 25 is dated to the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the first year of Nebuchadnezzar. Jeremiah reminded the people that for twenty-three years Yahweh's word had come to him, and he had spoken to them, rising up early and speaking. They had not listened. God had also sent many other prophets with the same appeal.

That appeal was simple and kind. Return now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that Yahweh has given to you. Because they refused, God would bring Nebuchadnezzar, whom he called his servant. This whole land will be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

The seventy years gave the exile a limit. After that, God would punish Babylon for its own iniquity. Then God told Jeremiah to take a cup of the wine of his wrath to the nations. The cup pictured God's judgment reaching every nation, from Jerusalem to Egypt and beyond. God rules over all peoples, not just Judah.

Jeremiah 25 · Grade 5

The Cup of the Nations

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 25 marks a turning point. It is dated to the fourth year of Jehoiakim, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (25:1). Jeremiah looked back on twenty-three years of ministry. Yahweh's word has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened. Rising up early is a picture of urgent, persistent effort.

God's patience had been long. His servants the prophets had pleaded with the people to return from their evil way and to stop serving other gods. Since they refused, God would use Nebuchadnezzar as his servant. The nations would serve the king of Babylon seventy years. Daniel later read this prophecy and prayed, knowing the seventy years were nearly finished (Daniel 9:2).

The seventy years also limited Babylon's power. When they were accomplished, God would punish the king of Babylon for their iniquity. Then the vision widened. Jeremiah was told to take the cup of the wine of God's wrath and make all the nations drink it, beginning with Jerusalem and reaching to Egypt, Edom, Moab, and the kings of the north. The chapter teaches that the God of Israel is the judge of the whole earth, and that his judgment begins with his own people.
