Jeremiah 25 · Grade 5
The Cup of the Nations
Read and Think
Jeremiah 25 marks a turning point. It is dated to the fourth year of Jehoiakim, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (25:1). Jeremiah looked back on twenty-three years of ministry. Yahweh's word has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened. Rising up early is a picture of urgent, persistent effort.
God's patience had been long. His servants the prophets had pleaded with the people to return from their evil way and to stop serving other gods. Since they refused, God would use Nebuchadnezzar as his servant. The nations would serve the king of Babylon seventy years. Daniel later read this prophecy and prayed, knowing the seventy years were nearly finished (Daniel 9:2).
The seventy years also limited Babylon's power. When they were accomplished, God would punish the king of Babylon for their iniquity. Then the vision widened. Jeremiah was told to take the cup of the wine of God's wrath and make all the nations drink it, beginning with Jerusalem and reaching to Egypt, Edom, Moab, and the kings of the north. The chapter teaches that the God of Israel is the judge of the whole earth, and that his judgment begins with his own people.
