Good Figs and Bad Figs

Name Date

Read the Story

After the king of Babylon carried away King Jeconiah and many people, God showed Jeremiah something. Two baskets of figs were set before the temple.

One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first-ripe. The other had very bad figs that could not be eaten. God asked Jeremiah what he saw.

God explained the picture. The captives taken to Babylon were like the good figs. God would set his eyes on them for good and bring them again to the land. He would build them and plant them. He would give them a heart to know him, and they would return with their whole heart.

Jeremiah 24 · Grade 4

A Heart to Know Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 24 takes place after King Jeconiah, the princes, and the craftsmen were carried off to Babylon. People left in Jerusalem might have thought they were the lucky ones, favored by God. God showed Jeremiah a vision to correct that idea. Two baskets of figs were set before Yahweh's temple.

Then Yahweh asked me, What do you see, Jeremiah? He saw very good figs, like the first-ripe, and very bad figs that could not be eaten. God said the captives in Babylon were the good figs. Their exile was hard, but God would set his eyes on them for good. I will build them, and not pull them down. I will plant them, and not pluck them up.

God promised a deep change. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am Yahweh. They would be his people, and he would be their God. Meanwhile King Zedekiah and those who stayed in Jerusalem were like the bad figs, because they kept refusing to listen. Their trouble would continue.

Jeremiah 24 · Grade 5

Exile as a Place of Grace

Name Date

Read and Think

After Nebuchadnezzar took King Jeconiah, the princes of Judah, and the skilled craftsmen and smiths to Babylon, those left in Jerusalem assumed they were the faithful remnant. God gave Jeremiah a vision of two baskets of figs before the temple. One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first-ripe; the other had figs so bad they could not be eaten.

The interpretation turned expectations upside down. Like these good figs, so I will regard the captives of Judah. Exile was not proof of God's rejection. It was the place where God would do his renewing work. I will set my eyes on them for good, and I will bring them again to this land. The language of building and planting echoes Jeremiah's original call in chapter 1.

The heart of the promise is inward transformation. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am Yahweh. They will be my people, and I will be their God; for they will return to me with their whole heart. This anticipates the new covenant of chapter 31. By contrast, Zedekiah and those who stayed, along with those who fled to Egypt, were like the bad figs, because they continued in stubborn disobedience.

Show What You Know

  1. What did those left in Jerusalem assume?

  2. How did God reinterpret exile?

  3. What earlier passage do building and planting echo?

  4. Which later chapter does the promise of a heart to know God anticipate?
