Jeremiah 20 · Grade 5
Persuaded and Prevailed Upon
Read and Think
Jeremiah 20 shows the cost of being a prophet. Pashhur son of Immer, the chief officer in Yahweh's house, heard Jeremiah's temple sermon. Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks at the upper gate of Benjamin. When he released him the next day, Jeremiah renamed him Magormissabib, terror on every side, and announced that Judah would go into captivity in Babylon.
The rest of the chapter is Jeremiah's most raw lament. Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded. Jeremiah felt overpowered by his calling and mocked all day. His message of violence and destruction made him a reproach. Even his familiar friends watched for him to stumble. Yet he could not quit. If he tried, there was in his heart as it were a burning fire shut up in his bones. I am weary with holding it in. I can't.
Remarkably, Jeremiah moved from complaint to confidence. But Yahweh is with me as an awesome mighty one. He committed his cause to God, who tests the righteous and sees the heart and the mind. He even broke into praise. Sing to Yahweh! Praise Yahweh, for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers. Then, immediately, he cursed the day he was born. Scripture does not tidy up Jeremiah's emotions. It shows a faithful servant bringing both despair and praise to God.
