A Spring and a Broken Tank

Name Date

Read the Story

God remembered when his people loved him. They followed him in the wilderness. Then they turned away. They went after gods that were not real.

God said he was like a spring of living water. The people left the spring. They dug tanks that leaked. A leaky tank cannot hold water. Only God can give what people need.

Memory Verse

“For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and cut out cisterns for themselves: broken cisterns that can’t hold water.

Two Wrong Things

Name Date

Read the Story

God sent Jeremiah to speak to Jerusalem. God remembered the kindness of their youth. Long ago they loved him like a bride. They followed him in the wilderness.

God brought them into a good land full of fruit. But the people forgot him. They went after worthless things. Even the priests did not ask where God was.

God said his people did two wrong things. They left him, the spring of living waters. Then they dug their own cisterns. A cistern is a hole that holds water. But theirs were broken and could not hold water.

Jeremiah 2 · Grade 4

Broken Cisterns

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Jeremiah to proclaim a message in the ears of Jerusalem. God remembered the kindness of his people's youth, when they loved him like a bride and followed him through the wilderness. Israel was holy to God, like the first fruits of a harvest.

But their fathers had gone far from God and walked after worthless things. God had brought them into a plentiful land, yet they defiled it. The priests did not look for God. The rulers broke his law. The prophets spoke by Baal. God pointed out that no nation changes its gods, even false ones, yet his people had traded their glory for what does not profit.

Then God gave a famous picture. His people had committed two evils. They had forsaken him, the spring of living waters, and cut out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can't hold water. God had planted them like a noble vine, but they had turned wild. Still, when trouble came, they would cry to him to save them.

  1. How did God describe his people's early love?

  2. What did God point out about other nations?

Jeremiah 2 · Grade 5

Two Evils

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 2 opens with tender memory. God recalled the kindness of Israel's youth, their love as a bride, how they followed him in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. Israel was holiness to Yahweh, the first fruits of his increase. The rest of the chapter reads like a case in a courtroom, as God lays out his charge against his people.

God asked what wrong their fathers had found in him, that they went far away and walked after worthless vanity. He had brought them into a plentiful land, but they defiled it. Priests, rulers and prophets all failed. God invited them to search from the islands of Kittim to Kedar: no nation had ever traded its gods, even though those gods were not gods at all. Yet God's people had changed their glory for that which doesn't profit.

At the center stands the image of two evils. They forsook God, the spring of living waters, and dug cisterns that cannot hold water. Running spring water was precious in a dry land; a cracked cistern held only stale dregs, if anything. The chapter goes on to describe the people's restless turning to Egypt and Assyria, their idols of wood and stone, and their claim to be innocent. God said that a nation that rejects him will be ashamed of the very powers it trusted.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the chapter open?

  2. What did God say no other nation had done?

  3. Why is a spring better than a cistern in a dry land?

  4. What did the people claim even after turning away?
