A Jar That Could Not Be Fixed

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Jeremiah to buy a potter's clay jar. He was to take some of the elders of the people and the priests with him. They went out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, by the gate.

Jeremiah gave them God's message. The people had forsaken God and followed other gods. They had not listened to him. So trouble was coming to the city.

Then Jeremiah broke the jar while the men watched. God said the city would be broken like a potter's vessel that can't be made whole again. Afterward Jeremiah stood in the court of God's house. He told all the people that they had made their necks stiff and would not hear God's words.

Memory Verse

Jeremiah 19 · Grade 4

A Vessel That Can't Be Made Whole

Name Date

Read and Think

In chapter 18 Jeremiah watched a potter reshape soft clay. In chapter 19 God told him to buy a finished, hardened clay jar. He took some elders of the people and of the priests to the valley of the son of Hinnom, near the potsherd gate. There Jeremiah spoke to the kings of Judah and the people of Jerusalem.

God said the people had forsaken him and filled the place with the worship of other gods. They had refused to listen for generations. Because of this, the valley would be renamed and great disaster would fall on the city. The details were so terrible that God said everyone who heard them would have their ears tingle.

Then Jeremiah broke the jar in front of the men. Soft clay can be reshaped, but a fired jar that breaks cannot be made whole again. God said he would break the city the same way. Afterward Jeremiah stood in the court of Yahweh's house and repeated the warning. The people had made their neck stiff, that they might not hear his words.

Jeremiah 19 · Grade 5

The Potsherd Gate

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 19 continues the potter imagery of chapter 18, but with a sharp change. In chapter 18 the clay was still soft on the wheel and could be remade. Now God told Jeremiah, Go, and buy a potter's earthen container, and take some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests. The location mattered. The valley of the son of Hinnom was where Judah had practiced the worst forms of false worship.

There Jeremiah announced judgment on the kings of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. They had forsaken God, made the place foreign to him, and worshiped gods their fathers had not known. God said the valley would no longer be called Topheth or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of Slaughter. The coming siege would be so severe that its horror would make the ears of everyone who heard it tingle.

Then came the dramatic sign. Jeremiah broke the container in the sight of the men. God declared that he would break this people and this city as one breaks a potter's vessel, that can't be made whole again. The difference between the chapters is the difference between a heart still open to God and one that has hardened past repair. Jeremiah then preached the same message in the temple court, saying the people had made their neck stiff. That bold sermon led directly to his arrest in chapter 20.

Show What You Know

  1. How does chapter 19 change the potter imagery of chapter 18?

  2. Why did the location of the valley matter?

  3. What new name did God give the valley?

  4. What did Jeremiah's temple sermon lead to?
