Making It Again

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Jeremiah to go down to the potter's house. There Jeremiah watched the potter working at his wheel. The pot he was making was marred in his hand.

The potter did not throw the clay away. He made it again into another pot, as seemed good to him. God said his people were like clay in the potter's hand.

God explained that if a nation turns from its evil, he will relent. He wanted his people to return from their evil ways. But they said it was no use. They wanted to follow their own plans. Some people even made plans against Jeremiah.

Like Clay in the Potter's Hand

Name Date

Read and Think

God gave Jeremiah a lesson he could watch. Arise, and go down to the potter's house. Jeremiah saw the potter at the wheels. When the vessel was marred, the potter did not give up. He reshaped the clay into another vessel, as seemed good to the potter.

God asked if he could not do with Israel as this potter. As the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. God explained how this worked. If he warned a nation and it turned from evil, he would relent. If he promised good to a nation and it did evil, he would reconsider the good.

Sadly, the people answered that it was in vain. They would walk after their own plans. God said even snow on the mountains of Lebanon stays faithful, yet his people had forgotten him. Some people then planned to attack Jeremiah with their words. Jeremiah asked God to remember how he had prayed for them.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the potter do when the vessel was marred?

  2. What did God say Israel was like?

  3. What happens when a warned nation turns from evil?

  4. How did the people answer?

Jeremiah 18 · Grade 5

The Sovereign and Responsive Potter

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 18 is one of the best-known parables in the prophets. God told Jeremiah to go to the potter's house, where he would hear God's words. When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel. The potter was in full control, yet he was patient and purposeful with flawed clay.

God applied the picture with a question. House of Israel, can't I do with you as this potter? God has authority over nations. Yet verses 7 to 10 show that his dealings respond to how people answer him. If a nation turns from its evil, God will relent of the disaster he planned. If a nation does evil after God promised good, he will reconsider the good. God's sovereignty and human response are held together.

The people's reply was hopeless and stubborn. It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans. God marveled that even nature is steady, yet his people forgot him and walked in byways instead of ancient paths. Opponents then plotted to strike Jeremiah with the tongue. In his distress, Jeremiah reminded God that he had stood before him to speak good for them, and he asked God to deal with his enemies. In the New Testament, Paul uses the potter and clay picture when speaking of God's purposes (Romans 9:21).

Show What You Know

  1. What does the potter show about God?

  2. How do verses 7 to 10 describe God's dealings?

  3. What was the people's reply?

  4. What had Jeremiah done for the people before they plotted against him?
