Blessed Is the Man Who Trusts

Name Date

Read the Story

God described two kinds of people. The first trusts in people and turns away from God. He is like a bush in the desert. He does not see when good comes. He lives in dry places.

The second trusts in Yahweh. He is like a tree planted by the waters. Its roots go out by the river. When heat comes, its leaf stays green. Even in a year of drought it keeps yielding fruit.

God said the heart is deceitful above all things. But God searches the mind and tries the heart. Jeremiah prayed for God to heal him and save him. God also told the people to keep the Sabbath day holy and rest from carrying loads.

Memory Verse

“Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh.

Two Ways to Live

Name Date

Read and Think

God set out two pictures side by side. Cursed is the man who trusts in man and whose heart departs from Yahweh. He will be like a bush in the desert, living in parched places and missing good when it comes. By contrast, blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh.

That person is like a tree planted by the waters, spreading its roots by the river. It does not fear when heat comes. Its leaf stays green, and it keeps yielding fruit even in drought. Trusting God does not mean hard times never come. It means having roots in a source that does not run dry.

God also warned that the heart is deceitful above all things and asked who can know it. Only God searches the mind and tries the heart. Jeremiah turned this into prayer. Heal me, O Yahweh, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise. Finally God called Judah to keep the Sabbath holy and not to carry burdens through the gates on that day.

Blessed Is the One Whose Confidence Is in Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 17 opens by saying the sin of Judah was engraved on the tablet of their heart. Even their children remembered their altars to other gods. God warned that their treasures would be given away. Then the chapter turns to a wisdom contrast that echoes Psalm 1. Cursed is the man who trusts in man, relies on strength of flesh, and whose heart departs from Yahweh. He is like a bush in the desert in an uninhabited salt land.

Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh. He will be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river. The image does not promise there will be no heat or drought. It promises that the tree will not be concerned in the year of drought and will not cease from yielding fruit. The difference is the hidden source beneath the soil.

The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? God answered that he searches the mind and tries the heart. God is called the spring of living waters, echoing chapter 2. Jeremiah prayed, Heal me, O Yahweh, and I will be healed. God then sent Jeremiah to the gates to call Judah to keep the Sabbath. Faithful rest would show trust in God, and the city's future was tied to it.

Show What You Know

  1. What wisdom passage does this contrast echo?

  2. What does the tree image promise and not promise?

  3. What does verse 9 say about the heart?

  4. What would keeping the Sabbath show?
